Opening Osmian's Door
New Life as a Max Level ArchmageOpening Osmian’s Door begins as an interruption in Vivi’s research and becomes an encounter with one of the Thaumaturgical Institute’s most persistent mysteries. She solves the unfinished spell carved into the door, lowering its formidable defenses and opening it just far enough to reveal darkness. The discovery is not a completed trial: what lies beyond remains unknown as Vivi approaches the threshold with Saffra beside her.
Context and discovery
Vivi is gathering general materials on world history in the Thaumaturgical Institute Library when a ping to her magical senses draws her away from the library map. Between two bookshelves, set into the wall, she finds an unmarked door. Its unassuming appearance conceals enchantments powerful enough to make her pause: on her initial appraisal, she estimates that their strength may reach the sixteenth tier or higher, and compares the magic favorably with the defenses around the convoy. She expects that dismantling them would take effort, though not that they could truly stop her.
The door offers no placard, explanation, or obvious clue to its purpose. Vivi considers ordinary possibilities, such as a staff entrance, and more consequential ones, including access to restricted shelves where archmages might keep personal codices. Before she can settle on an explanation, she notices markings cut into the rich teak. The door’s importance is not announced by its location or its decoration; it emerges through the spellwork that has made the barrier both an obstacle and a puzzle.
The unfinished spell
The markings form a half-finished design. Vivi recognizes what appears to be the outline of a gravity spell, then identifies a more particular function: anchors attached to objects—or possibly other targets—would draw those targets toward one another. Her interpretation remains a deduction rather than an explanation supplied by the door. She tests it against the design and sees no other purpose that would unite its elements.
The task is difficult in a way that differs from simply casting a spell. Vivi believes she could create a spell circle for a similar effect relatively easily; the challenge lies in understanding someone else’s incomplete construction and modifying it. That distinction turns an intimidating barrier into an engrossing intellectual problem. She studies the dense pattern, considers how its pieces fit, and becomes absorbed in finding the solution. The scene’s suspense comes less from a threat of immediate violence than from the gap between the door’s overwhelming defenses and the apparently small, precise act needed to answer its riddle.
Once she is satisfied with her reading, Vivi traces the runes with quick brushes of mana. Her attention is on how rapidly she has understood the design and on alternative, more efficient ways she might have completed it. In her concentration, she does not stop to reconsider whether it is wise to inscribe symbols on a strange, heavily protected door in an unfamiliar part of the Institute.
A legendary entrance opens
The result is quiet. No alarm sounds, and the door does not burst apart; instead, a slight click marks the change. Its defensive enchantments fade, and the teak slab creaks open by roughly two inches—enough to suggest that entry is possible, but not enough to show what awaits inside. Vivi only then recognizes that her judgment may have failed her again. She speculates that the door could be one of many magical challenges left around an institution where mages have gathered for millennia, but this remains her explanation, not an established account of its purpose.
Saffra arrives carrying a bundle of books and stops short in horror at the sight of Vivi and the opened door. She identifies it as Osmian’s Door, then admits that she knows little about it herself. Its reputation is expansive but imprecise: it is supposed to hold Osmian’s legacy or inheritance, perhaps a treasure, yet no one seems to know exactly what it contains. Saffra describes the story as essentially a folk tale. The legendary object has been visible enough to acquire a name and a history, but its actual contents and function have remained out of reach.
The story also changes Vivi’s understanding of what she has just done. Saffra says that Archmage Lysander is the only person who has ever opened the door. Vivi asks whether Archmage Aeris has done so; Saffra is confused by the suggestion and is unsure whether the door has ever even presented itself to him. The exchange does not establish why Vivi succeeded, or whether the door selected her. It does establish the scale of the discrepancy: an achievement associated with the Institute’s headmaster has been triggered by Vivi’s spontaneous solution to the carved spell.
At the threshold
Vivi searches the door and the surrounding space for any written instruction that might explain why Saffra believes she should not follow. Finding none, she beckons Saffra toward the opening and pushes the slab farther with her foot. A dark void is visible beyond it. Vivi reaches a hand inside and feels no adverse effect, a limited test that reassures her enough to proceed but does not reveal what the space contains.
She treats the uncertainty as a practical risk. Before moving farther, she checks that Saffra’s defensive enchantments are in place and takes her by the elbow, reasoning that physical contact will make it harder for the two of them to be separated. The gesture joins curiosity to caution: Vivi is willing to cross the threshold, but she does not mistake an uneventful first touch for proof that the place is safe. The scene ends with the entrance open and the pair prepared to enter, leaving Osmian’s supposed legacy—and the reason Vivi could unlock its first barrier—unresolved.
